Presented at the 2013 Caravan Salon in Dusseldorf, a European show dedicated to what Americans call camper vans, the latest Westfalia "Nugget" gives an alternative to those who don't want a giant RV. It's so damn cool.
You may have been surprised that we put a Toyota Hiace as the camper van on the list of the most hipster cars ever made instead of a VW bus, but it only shows that there's more to camper vans than Volkswagen buses. Like this funky Ford!
There's an expandable bench and table inside, next to wardrobes and various storage compartments. The kitchen area has a two-burner gas cooker and a 40-liter freezer and a 42-liter fresh and waste water tank, with an outdoor shower at the back. And yes, you do sleep on the roof.
Powered by a 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine producing 125 or 155 horsepower linked to a six-speed manual, this Ford has everything you would expect from a Westfalia. The sliding door makes for easy access, while the Nugget has a separated two room setup for more privacy.
What started its life as a Ford Transit Custom Estate becomes a Nugget after you leave an additional $21,425 at your dealer in Europe for the Westfalia treatment. That means the more powerful camper will set you back $71,760 in Europe.
Who said camping was cheap?
It's worth nothing that, while this isn't for sale in the U.S. right now, a larger variation of this same van will be on sale here next year.
