Have you seen the car at the top of this photo? If so, you could help police in Union Township, New Jersey to track down a driver they believe caused a fatal motorcycle crash and then fled the scene.
Officials at the Union Police Department have turned to Jalopnik readers for help identifying and possibly finding this vehicle. They say that around 9:55 p.m. on Sept. 15, the silver sedan left a gas station on North Avenue. The driver, described as wearing light-colored slacks or possibly surgical scrubs and a bright-colored shirt, paid cash for gas and then exited the scene.
Police say the driver then pulled out into the path of a motorcycle, who attempted an evasive maneuver but then lost control and dropped the bike. The suspect briefly remained at the scene is believed to have checked on the crash victim in the roadway before returning to his car and fleeing, officials said.
The motorcycle rider, 30-year-old Carlos Gonzalez Ospina of Washington state, died at the scene, police said. He leaves behind a 7-year-old son.
Police are urging the driver to come forward and cooperate with the investigation. They say the motorcycle rider's speed played a role in the crash as well. Two separate rewards of $5,000 each are being offered for information that leads to the driver's arrest.
Using surveillance photos from the gas station, police are attempting to identify the vehicle and the driver. That looks like a first-generation Mazda6 to me, but if you have other ideas feel free to share them in the comments.
Anyone who recognizes the vehicle or driver in the images is asked to contact the Union Township Police Department Traffic Bureau at 908-851-5070. Tips also may be given via email at Traffic@UnionTownship.com.
