An off-duty cop with the New York City Police Department was charged with DWI after driving the wrong way on a local highway and smashing into five other cars.
Ronald Holmes, a 20-year veteran of the Force, drove his Mazda MPV east on the Southern State Parkway's westbound lanes at 1:45 this morning, according to the Daily News. Somehow this story has a semi-happy ending in that only one person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Everyone else was treated at the scene.
Incidents like these are truly terrifying, and it's a wonder that no one was seriously hurt. Unfortunately the same cannot be said of many similar incidents. In 2009, Diane Schuler killed herself and seven other people when she drove the wrong way down the Taconic State Parkway just a few miles northwest of this occurrence, with a BAC of 0.19.
