In 2000, Volkswagen unveiled a concept version of the Beetle known as the Dune. Now, it's 2014, and Volkswagen is getting ready to unveil a concept version of the Beetle known as the Dune. It's deja vu all over again, again.
The difference between the last Dune and this Dune is that there are rumblings this one could actually make production. Of course, the word "Dune" should be taken lightly. Modern off-roaders, as has been said ad nauseam, don't ever go off-road. Do you expect to actually see a Beetle Dune jumping actual dunes?
No. It's not rugged like an old Baja Bug that can just be flipped on its side and then driven away with no worries later on.
The Dune Concept should have a GTI powerplant, so about 220 horsepower and it looks like the illustrations show a DSG gearbox will be putting that power down.
We'll see more of the gussied up Dune at the Detroit show next week.
