I have to say, never experienced this before. I guess it's rare that a shop specializing in servicing Porsches in the NYC area is used to dealing with rich customers that don't check their receipts, but I do. Last week we all read about how shops will take advantage of customers with the most simple automotive maintenance, such as an oil change. This happens to be true, and that is why I am a smart customer and always do my research regarding the prices of parts and the actual length of time necessary to complete the task.
I email a shop that I have previously had great experiences with this morning to set up an oil change for my 981S (love it!). I got in response a quote for $320. Outrageous! I respond saying parts are around $50 and knowing my car only takes 8 quarts of synthetic, around $70 there. In his quote he is charging me for 9 quarts at $14, $6 over retail. I inform him that my car takes 8 quarts.
I sent this to him:
oil cost @ 14 per quart: 126 - that would be 9 quarts, boxster only needs 7.9 - i can get Mobil 1 synthetic 0w-40 oil for 37.99 in a 5 quart jug.
I'm glad you guys are doing so well you can turn away smart customers.
The owner of this prestige independent Porsche shop emails me back, and this is when the fun begins:
Just goes to show, not only are they trying to rip us off, they think we don't know. Seems like I'll be changing my own oil at my Uncles place. Who needs them anyway.
