A small plane crashed at Nashville International Airport in the early AM hours yesterday, killing the pilot on board. But the unusual part is that nobody noticed the crashed plane until after sunrise. How is that possible?

The single engined Cessna crashed sometime after 3 AM Tuesday morning at Nashville's airport, where it burned. It was a foggy and overcast night, but Nashville's control tower is staffed 24 hours a day, so it's unclear how a crashed plane went totally unnoticed.

It was only noticed after sunrise, when another plane was taxiing to the runway and saw the wreckage. That means that no ground safety personnel that should have patrolled the area saw it, nor do we know if the plane was in contact with air traffic controllers before it went down.

One theory is that the pilot was flying visually, and the fog just made him unable to see anything at all. The FAA and NTSB are investigating.
