Is VW Bringing Back A Six-Cylinder Golf R? S

There's a very vocal group of Wolfsburg fans who hate that the Volkswagen Golf R has gone the turbo four route and isn't turning back. Well, maybe the answer to calm the woes of the VR6 fans was hidden under the Design Vision GTI concept the whole time.

Recently, we heard rumors of an "extreme" Volkswagen Golf R Evo being developed and bound for Beijing in April. It's supposed to be loaded with carbon fiber and rid of things like a back seat, all in the name of weight savings. Oh, and the power would be upped significantly from the 296 horsepower in the Euro-spec Golf R's 2.0-liter turbo four.

We figured it would just be a very boosted turbo four going into the R Evo. Mercedes has done a very boosted 2.0-liter turbo in its A/CLA/GLA45 models with 355 horses to show for it.

But a tip on VWVortex from an admin's "old Facebook friend" suggests the 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 shown in the Design Vision GTI is bound for something small – like a Golf R Evo. In the Vision, it was rated at 503 horsepower and 413 lb.-ft. of torque with its twin turbos. Even if those figures are brought closer to reality, it should handily beat the 355 figure in those little AMGs.

Or maybe this is just a turbo V6 that's going in a new Touareg or Passat or 3-row crossover. We can dream about a VR6 Golf R, right?
